Axtell, Nebraska 1958
ReplyDeleteDear my darling daughter,
I'm in Nebraska now. I think I might settle here for awhile. I've found a man, a good man. His name is Robert. He treats me right and owns the cigar shop down from the farmer's market. I know you just had a birthday, and I sent you a gift in the mail. I really hope you like it.
Robert and I just returned from a little trip to see the The World's Largest Chicken farm. We met lots of nice people and spent a lot of time in the city on our way there.
Did you hear about the earthquakes down here recently? Oh boy were they scary. We suffered a couple broken book shelves and glassware. And it just about scared my dog to death. I've really started liking my garden. I could sit out there in our yard for hours upon hours.
I promise I'll start writing more.

Devils Lake, North Dakota 1969
ReplyDeleteI have arrived in North Dakota again and this time in this strange city called Devils Lake. The men here are to say the least, sloppy. One of them tried to have at me while I was on my way to the market. The winters here are harsh and the avalanches seem to make them a bit more interesting. The wolves come and go as they please, but so far the deaths have been minimal. I do not see myself staying here for long, but I will try to make the best of it for now. Wish me luck!
I know you must feel awful after not having been able to see me, but I am always there with you. Remember that, even if I am not with there physically, I am still there with you always. I will be back soon enough, I promise.
Love,
Your Only Mother

Good work, Catherine and Luis!
ReplyDeleteDeadwood, South Dakota 1958
ReplyDeleteIve arrived in Lawrence County, South Dakota, it is a desolate place, just a dot on the map. There are whore houses and saloons everywhere, it has a sense of the old west, or once was the old west. Between bars, and prostitute houses there are empty churches.. someone scary. I will be moving on soon, another town with another personality, dont bother looking for me, i will find you next time.

Valentine, Nebraska 1962
ReplyDeleteDear My Daughter,
I am here in Valentine. There is nothing here. The name is very misleading, as there are no men here capable of loving or applicable for the job due to age. There are ten buildings in "downtown" and three miles in between houses. I am moving on soon. I love you and will find you someday.
Love,
Your only Mother

Waterloo, Iowa 1958
ReplyDeleteDear My Daughter,
I arrived in Waterloo the other day. I might stay here awhile, and maybe you should visit. I thought about you on my trip out here. Its been too long since I've seen you. I might drop by in the coming years, but I would like it if you visited.
Trees are green and sway in the wind. The birds chirp and chase bugs. I saw a rabbit the other day.

Bacon Cove, Canada 1965
ReplyDeleteI am now in Canada and its is cold, but beautiful here. You would love here my little angel. The bears are so cute, and the moose are great too. I live in a little wooden cabin; probably stay here for a little while, not sure. Well I miss you! Write you soon.
Your only Mother.
Red Cliff, Colorado 1960
ReplyDeleteHi sweet daughter,
I have been living in the rocky mountains of Colorado. Apparently, the town I am living in is called Red Cliff. The cliffs are far from red-they are cold, snowy, and white. It is actually a very strange story how I ended up here. A few months ago, my money was stolen on my journey to Nebraska. This was very unfortunate because I knew this meant I had to settle somewhere for a while and get a job. As I was begging a clerk for a job at a meat market, a man approached me. He was very handsome and invited me to live with him on his farm in Colorado. Of course I agreed! His small home is very quaint and peaceful. Kind of lonely though, considering he lives in the middle of no where. However, overall, you would enjoy the mountain air. I love it here, but I will probably leave soon. Maybe venture down south where it is warmer.
Talk to you soon. Hope all is well.
Love always,
Your mother who always remembers
